Commercial Weight- loss Products and Programs(Weight maintenance, Overweight, Obesity and Severe Obesity)This section reviews some of the most popular types of commercial weight- loss products and programs. Non- clinical methods can take many forms. They include, but are not limited to, widely available weight management programs such as Weight Watchers, health coaches, diet books, Web sites such as www. Diets. com or www. Spark. People. com, over- the- counter (OTC) medications such as alli. Some non- clinical weight management methods may require you to use the program’s foods or supplements, and there may be fees for professional services. The range of weight- loss methods available is wide, and the claims they make are equally as wide. Some of the claims are reasonable (“Lose 1- 2 pounds per week”) and some are outlandish (“A bikini body in 3. It is important to remember that not all methods and claims are reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices and prescription and OTC weight- loss medications, but not weight- loss supplements or books. A good rule of thumb is if a product or claim sounds too good to be true, it probably is. A reasonable goal is to lose about a pound or two a week. Tags: aging, harmful choices, obesity. It is not uncommon for people to turn to popular diet books when seeking to lose or manage weight. Diet books have been around since at least the mid- 1. How do they work? One of the primary benefits of following a weight- loss program from a book is the cost. Most books are relatively inexpensive to purchase or can be obtained for free from a local library. ![]() Most do not require you to invest in packaged foods or other tools. You are usually looking at some form of dietary change and portion control, often paired with exercise and self- monitoring. For most people, the cost to follow the diet will be similar to what they already spend on the food they eat now. Weight- loss: Depending on your ability to follow the program, you may experience a one to two pound weight- loss per week. Concerns: The cons of using a diet book as your means of weight- loss include verifying the safety and efficacy of the plan. Authors trying to sell books are often biased, as they profit from book sales, and they may not have the qualifications necessary to provide health advice. ![]() 3 cup blanched almond flour (10 oz) 10 TBS psyllium husk powder (no substitutes) (90 grams) (must be a fine powder, measure weight to be sure) (I use. With the huge variety of plans available, the simple truth is that some diet books are good and others are not, and if you are not an expert, you may have a hard time choosing what ones are acceptable. In addition, using a book as your diet plan usually means you’re attempting to make a change on your own. For many people, especially those with health challenges like diabetes or with larger amounts of weight to lose, attempting to make the change on your own may reduce the chance of success and/or increase the risk of having complications. For this reason, it is always good to let a healthcare professional know if you are embarking on a weight- loss plan and to discuss the pros and cons with them. Marketdata Enterprise reported that in 2. Web site, so if this is what you are choosing, you are definitely not alone. Examples of popular diet books that advocate weight- loss methods generally deemed by dietitians to be safe and reasonably effective include: The South Beach Diet by Dr. Arthur Agatston. The Atkins Diet by Dr. Robert Atkins. The Volumetrics Eating Plan by Barbara Rolls. Eat This, Not That by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding. Online/Web- based Diet Programs. Like diet books, web- based diet programs come in many shapes and sizes. Some are free, some charge a fee. Some are nutritionally sound, some are not. How do they work? A number of these programs are online versions of in- person programs (www. Diets. com or www. Spark. People. com, may allow users to select from a variety of programs to suit their needs. Most online sites offer simple tools like recipes, meal ideas, eating out tips, workouts and progress tracking. Forums or chat- style discussions, which allow users to connect with one another for tips and ideas, are commonly found at these sites. Many sites offer “add- on” services (usually for a fee) such as a personal counselor, more in- depth tools or prepared meals. Many now also have “apps” that can be loaded onto a computer, tablet or smartphone to help with self- monitoring, reminders, shopping and more. Weight- loss: Depending on your ability to follow the program, you may experience a one to two pound weight- loss per week. ![]() ![]() Concerns: Like diet books, a self- directed web- based diet program may suit your needs if you are looking for flexible tools to help you manage your weight. In addition, both diet books and web- based diet programs allow people to use regular grocery store food, which most people prefer. As the quality of the eating plans vary both in their nutrition and safety, especially for those with certain medical conditions, it is best to discuss the plan you have chosen to follow with a healthcare professional before you start. Dietary Supplements. Perhaps the most complex set of products targeting individuals seeking to lose weight are dietary supplements. While manufacturing of dietary supplements is regulated by the FDA, companies marketing products in this category do not have to seek pre- market approval. This means that products do not have to undergo studies proving to the FDA that they are safe or effective before being sold. How do they work? While dietary supplements may contain ingredients that claim to support weight- loss or improved body composition, one needs to examine the action of each ingredient individually, as well as in relation to the other ingredients and to other medications one may be taking in order to judge the supplement’s potential effectiveness. If you are considering using a dietary supplement for weight- loss, it is best to take a list of its ingredients to a healthcare professional or pharmacist to determine if the product is right for you. Further guidance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on this topic can be found here: www. Weight- loss: Weight- loss results from dietary supplements are often difficult to measure as there are many supplements available that may or may not work in conjunction with another weight- loss strategy, such as exercise or changes in dietary restrictions. As with any weight- loss program, a one to two pound per week weight- loss is recommended for safety and health. Concerns: While companies are supposed to follow FDA and FTC guidance for advertising and claims, it is clear that many do not. Thus, it is not uncommon to see ads for dietary supplements claiming that you can lose weight rapidly without changing the way you eat, or without lifestyle changes. The influence of celebrity promoters can contribute to the perception that a product may offer a miracle cure for obesity. In fact, good scientific evidence that they work is generally lacking. Body Monitoring. A new method of controlling one’s weight has grown in popularity in the last few years – body monitoring. There are many different devices available and all come with a host of options, such as online tools, smartphone apps and more. How do they work? Body monitoring involves wearing a device, usually an armband or a gadget carried in one’s pocket, that tracks a sufficient number of bodily processes (skin temperature, movement, acceleration, heat flux and more) to be able to accurately report how many calories the wearer has burned. Combined with a detailed record of what one eats (that the wearer creates by entering items into an online log), it’s possible for someone to look at their calorie balance (calories in vs. This in turn allows them to make adjustments accordingly. Body monitors are significantly more accurate than pedometers, which only measure steps taken and not the intensity of activities. Weight- loss: Body monitoring devices alone will not result in weight- loss. These devices are meant to be used along with a weight- loss option. Concerns: Body monitors cost about $1. The benefit of using a body monitor is that a wearer will get a good understanding of which of their activities burn calories best. The downside is that food logging can become tiring, and the ability of a body monitor to accurately calculate calories depends entirely on how well the wearer tracks their food consumption. In addition, not everyone wants to wear an armband or carry a device at all times. Over- the- Counter Drugs. Currently alli. It is the only FDA- approved weight- loss medication that is available OTC and available at a higher dose with a prescription. It is a capsule that is usually taken three times per day before a meal that contains dietary fat. It works by decreasing the amount of fat your body absorbs. This means that only 2/3 of the calories that you take in from fat will be absorbed. The other 1/3 of the calories gets carried away in the digestion tract as stool. The company that makes this drug (Glaxo. Smith. Kline Consumer Healthcare) also offers a Web site with education and support tools for users at www. Weight- loss: The average weight- loss is about 5 percent of your weight after one- year. In a person who weighs 2. Concerns: It does not work well for people who are already on a low- fat diet since their calories from fat are already low. Individuals using alli. One of the advantages of alli. Common side effects are cramps, gas, stool leakage, oily spotting and gas with discharge that improve with a lower fat diet. Commercial Weight- loss Programs. Utilizing a commercial weight- loss center or program is one of the most popular options for someone affected by obesity. Commercial weight- loss programs often provide various resources such as pre- packaged meals, support and more. Programs usually offer a 1,0. Weight Watchers V Slimming World ? No points or syns, and exercise in the classes not just a weigh in. Did SW years ago and didn't work for me as I wasn't learning to control my portions. I am doing ww at the minute and have lost some weight although still have a long way to go. But I feel that my eating habits are changing for the better as I am now making better food choices and not over eating at meal times. Good luck whatever you choose I have done both and prefer slimming world. I lost 2 stone between August and December and although I haven't been able to go for 5 weeks I only gained 1/2 a pound over Christmas so I think it works quite well for me. I would like to lose 3 stone more this year. I have done both and currently doing slimming world. I've lost 1st. 8lb since May with another 2st. I have not reduced my portions any as i love to eat lots and it is still working well. I don't really get any big loses but when i stay on the plan i lose something (1- 2lb) every week! I feel like i can stick to it because i can eat big portions and most meals can be completely free, leaving syns for special things! I use the extra easy plan and think that the best weeks i have are when i go crazy on super free foods, it seems the more i eat the more i lose! I have fallen off the wagon a few times but it seems easy to get back on again! I never really feel like i'm on a diet, where as when i did weight watchers i ALWAYS felt like i was on a diet!!! Hi Twincrazy - I started SW at home before Christmas (I picked up the books on e. Bay and just followed it at home, no bloody time/too bloody knackered to get to a class in the evenings) - at have lost half a stone. I know it works as I have several friends who did it, but I am also making sure I'm throwing in at least three work- outs a week (a brisk walk around the block or a manic whizz on the exercise bike). Like becky I love my portion sizes on the large size, but it does seem to work, weirdly. If you need a diet buddy I'd be delighted to offer my support! I want to lose 2 stone and get back to some vague semblance of pre- baby size! Message deleted by Mumsnet.* I find WW too ruled by their branded ding- meals. Which are usually high in salt and not that great for you.*I have never once heard anyone at WW mention a WW ready meal. As you can see by my name this is something I have been thinking about for a while. I have done ww several times but never stick to it as I find I am too hungry. I am thinking about trying SW tmoz and think I will give it a go now. Slimming World all the way here too!! Between myself & my dh we've lost almost 7 stone. Both are target members and find the plan very easy to stick to! I'm also a consultant. I have done WW,SW,Rosemary conley and several others and when I was doing them they all worked fine . It is how well they fit into your lifestyle and if they are able to change your unhealthy lifestyle patterns in the long term that count. If you asked me a year ago what I liked best I would have said Slimming world. But due to no available class ,I rejoined weight watchers in June after a gap of over 1. Obviously everything was very differant and I was struck by how flexible the propoints sytem is - and how once you have been doing it a while you dont really count much at all. I also realised that the lack of any portion control with slimming world had not helped me to learn any self control - so when i ate unlimited off the plain i was just being a greedy pig I have lost over 2 stone with weight watchers and feel much more in control of my health than ever before - but I would not tell anybody its THE BEST ,just that if you need help in learning to manage portion size, and to plan your healthy lifestyle, that it might be more suited. Of course I might not mention my Christmas 4. Incidentailly if you do WW online, there is a quidco cashback offer that makes it ? Have posted the link on the online topic above. Tarty. Mc. Farty - the last time I went to Weight Watchers they kept going on about how many points in this ready and meal and that meal. Not necessarily the leader but other members. I just find the whole branded food thing a bit off putting! Starting slimming world tomorrow so would like moral support please as am low about being overweight. Need to lose between 1& 2 stone and really want it to work as feel fat and ugly. Hey Munchkins! I'll give you support! I'm doing SW from home but will happily offer ay support and encouragement I can! Don't feel low, it's bloody hard work being a mum and trying to find time for yourself to diet and exercise, something else always comes up - work, children, shopping etc. The great thing is that you are finding time for yourself now. You'll get there. Let me know how to get on tomorrow and PM me if you need a buddy - but I bet you make some great friends tomorrow! I have been and joined SW tonight, have never done it before so will try and get my head around it and hope it works for me. Thank you very much sharks for your kind words. I'm actually starting on Mon now as dh works every wed this month but I do really want this to be a permanent weight loss as I yoyo so much and it cant be good for my health. How are you finding it? Munch - I find it easy peasey! I'm a veggie so it's very simple for me to follow as the free food is pretty much what I eat anyway. Plus I can stuff my fat face and apparently that's ok too. Yay! So long as I'm prepared and organised (like all diets) I can stay on track very easily. I promise you, you'll love it - I know meat eaters also find it very simple. My DP doesn't care what he eats so I just cook the same as me and he doesn; t know the difference. Diet - how was it last night? Sharks, I think you are going to be a great motivator for me! I've just had a look at a sample 7 day menu and it all looks good and not far off what I have now. I think for me, it's upping the exercise that will be the key. I'm joining a gym next Mon too and will go 3 times a week which combined with SW should be the kickstart I need. Thanks again for your encouragement! Munchkins I am starting SW in about 1. I did do WW and was doing OK until all the points changed, that and a change of venue meant I stopped going. Good luck 5go mad, hope it goes well. Hi! I think with WW/SW they are very much suited to diff kinds of people. If you like, and are used to, cooking things from scratch (like me) SW is better. WW seems best for those that are more into grabbing something pre- packaged where you can easily work out the points. I have tried WW before and was starving most of the time and found it a faff to work out the points of all the ingredients. However, I joined SW last Weds and had my weigh in last night and lost 3. Also got slimmer of the week as nobody else had lost (because of xmas/new year)! I have had the best week, have eaten some gorgeous meals and big portions (spag bol, meatloaf, ham egg and sw chips, stir fry..). Cant wait to carry on my SW journey. Congratulations Rach, well done, brilliant news! I love cooking and find SW ideal for that reason - but also love that I can just have a jacket spud and beans if I'm tired or can't be arsed. Munch thank you, we can do it, I know we can. Sorry, a bit cheesy, but sometimes we all need a bit of a cheer! Exercise also a great idea, I used to loads before DS was born, but have now reset my goals as being more realistic, otherwise I will get frustrated with how rubbish I am and go and open the wine! I'm aiming for 2 cardio of 3. And I won; t beat myself up about it if I don't make it one week due to DS keeping me up all night (like last night, little monster). Five - how did you get on? Seem ok? Wow, Rach that is brilliant especially as it was xmas etc! Thank you Shark, I think I work better with positive reinforcement and someone who understands how ot actually feels to be always worrying about food /weight. I cook from scratch so it seems sw will be more up my alley! Good luck to everyone embarking on a weightloss journey... Free Weight Loss Program .
